Yolanda’s Top Five Tips to Presenting Your Best Self Virtually
April 22, 2020
The pandemic has ushered-in a new era of virtual communication. Now, the “stage” has changed into a new normal of various virtual platforms. How do you present your best self when you’re not even in the room? From meetings to webinars, following are Yolanda F. Johnson’s top five tips to best present yourself and have the most effective meetings, interviews and presentations:
1) Always Remember to Breathe.
Someone give you a question you weren’t ready for? That's okay; give yourself just five seconds for a deep breath to buy time to respond and relax.
2) Remember Your Background.
Now, your “stage” is your very own home, which means that the entire virtual world now has a glimpse into your private world. From the paintings on the wall behind you to the content of your bookcase, you're now on display, so put your best foot forward!
3) Give Color a Try.
Whether it’s lipstick or a brightly-colored necktie, now is the time to shine and experiment with colors that compliment you.
4) Know Your Platforms.
Trust me, there's nothing worse than fidgeting with your platform when you need to focus on making an important point. Many of those offered, especially Zoom, are user-friendly and give demonstrations for users.
5) Be Prepared.
There is no substitute for adequate preparation. A wise person once said, “Prepare like you've never won; perform like you’ve never lost!”
Not only should your hair and attire be appropriate, but know the content of what meeting your attending. Don’t think that just because you are not in the same room, your audience won’t know if you are not engaged.
If you keep the above in mind, you'll be on your path to a successful virtual presence.
