WID President's Letters - By Yolanda F. Johnson

December 2020 - Reflect. Remember. Release. Recharge.

Following is a message that I want to share with all women in the development field, regardless of what “hat” I may be wearing between my various roles, as we head to the end of 2020. So, even if you've heard me say it before or you just recently read it elsewhere, it is what is truly on my heart and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have enjoyed sharing it.

As 2020 comes to a close, I have found it a good time to reflect upon our utter resilience as a sector - and as a nation - this year. 2020 has presented many challenges, from the Coronavirus pandemic to the racial justice movement; from financial uncertainty to an unprecedented presidential election.

And yet, we stand. What I really want to urge each of you to do as we bid 2020 farewell is to take a moment to acknowledge all that has happened in your own lives and careers. No sugar-coating, but a deep, brutally honest assessment of what truly happened, how it relates to you on a personal level, and how you feel about that. Then, take what you learned from it all, hold it, remember it, and release it, leaving plenty of room for whatever new, hopeful, happy thoughts, dreams, and goals you have for 2021.

A new year is upon us and we have no idea what it may bring. As much as that may cause anxiety, I hope it also offers the hope that a tabula rasa - a “blank slate” - can give us. You are all strong, resilient, and beautiful, and I am proud to be the leader of such an exceptional organization full of such exceptional women.

Please know that WID is here to support you whatever 2021 may bring and we are excited for what's to come.

Wishing you joy and blessings at this most wonderful time of the year,

Onward, Upward, Forward,

-Yolanda
