WID President's Letters - By Yolanda F. Johnson

January 2021 - Hope on the Horizon

As I write this, our country is in a state of taking things day-by-day in 2021, following the shellshock of so many unprecedented experiences and somehow it’s just the end of January! The Coronavirus pandemic still rages, yet the most basic of public health methods to stop the spread of the virus have become politicized and vaccination rollouts have not gone according to plan. However, as I’ve mentioned to you before, I am a pragmatic optimist, and I happen to be a person of faith. So, I just want to remind you, that even in a year where we’re only a few weeks in and things have already had a rough start: there is still hope on the horizon.

We just witnessed the transfer to a new administration in the White House and await new things to come for nonprofits. We look forward to positive changes in the Coronavirus vaccine plans; we look forward to an economic stimulus plan that will certainly affect all us in the fundraising and philanthropic sectors; and we look forward to the hope that only a New Year can bring.

I want to remind you that at the crux of a society’s soul are incredible women, just like each of you in the WID community. We understand certain things on such an innate level, we most often have such extraordinary intelligence to read between the lines of a hard-hearted world that has for so long been led by men and determine the best solutions for change. We hold incredible power and while we have not always been allowed the opportunity to use it as we deserve, along with the hope on the horizon are leaders, such as the very first woman and first woman of color Vice President of the United States of America, who have grand plans to move women forward. WID Is part of that movement to empower women who are doing the “good work” to ensure a more just and equitable society through philanthropy.

It is in that very spirit that I invite you to enjoy this month’s e-News, where we are thrilled to announce the March 16th WID Virtual Forum! It’s going to be an incredible morning of exceptional workshops on a variety of topics with amazing experts. It will culminate with a powerhouse panel on pay equity, as WID joins forces with AFP Global’s Women’s Impact Initiative, Women of Color in Fundraising and Philanthropy (WOC), Catalyst, and PowHer NY. There are so many wonderful things to come for WID in 2021 and we welcome you to stay connected with us and join us for the journey ahead.

Stay hopeful. Stay vigilant. And let's keep things moving...

Onward, Upward, Forward,

-Yolanda
