WID President's Letters - By Yolanda F. Johnson

February 2022 - Black History Month

As February comes to a close, the new year is in full swing. Here at WID, there has already been incredible programming and Black History Month has been an important time of reflection and community. Last month’s program on digital fundraising was a hit, providing us all with useful tips and tools for online fundraising with maximum impact. It was a perfect way to start the year, followed by a poignant and truly authentic conversation during the February Deconstructing Development episode on the lived experiences of Black women in the profession.

I created Deconstructing Development in 2020 to keep the WID community strong when the pandemic first hit. I am proud to now say that it has become an important part of our programming, offering a brave space for honest insights and thoughtful dialogue. As a Black woman, and the first one to lead WID, it was personally very meaningful for me to invite my fellow WID board members, Chantal Bonitto and Wendy Sealey, to join me and my co-host (also a fellow board member), the amazing Jill Slattery, for this conversation. It yielded many wonderful insights and helped give voice in a way that was helpful to both women of color and to our allies in the WID community.

In this eNEWS, you’ll also find an updated IED milestones timeline, showing the ways that WID has endeavored to foster more inclusion and celebrate diversity and equity. And our Member Spotlight features none other than someone who is an inspiring friend, colleague, former WID board member, and champion of the causes of women and girls, Andrea Brown.

For Women’s History Month, there are more wonderful things in store, and I look forward to “seeing” you at those events. And don’t forget to purchase your tickets and tables for our return to Woman of Achievement 2022! We’re honoring Ana Oliveira (for a second time because she’s that incredible) and Jilly Stephens. You can learn more here.

Please know that WID is working hard to keep your safety and comfort in mind for our return to in-person events. If you have any questions about WoA or anything else, we are always here to answer and to assist. We love to hear from you!

Onward, Upward, Forward,

-Yolanda
